Bay of Plenty Times, 12th December 2014

After completing his studies at Tauranga Boys College, Steve joined a nursery in Te Puna where he spent 18 months before heading to Queensland to surf and have fun on the Gold Coast. But he soon developed a taste for entrepreneurship, starting a company that installed small arterial bores in new housing developments so residents could water their lawns.

He returned a year later to Tauranga, rejoining the nursery then moving into the Te Puna Pack and Cool kiwifruit post-harvest operations. He eventually worked in a range of cool store and packing roles, before moving to run the company's orchard management operations. When Te Puna Pack and Cool was sold, Mr Saunders and former general manager Trevor Heard set up Gro-Link, an orchard and post-harvest management company. They were also the first in the industry to set up a kiwifruit grower pool trust entity.

Among this year's highlights of Auckland's Heroic Garden Festival are two special Mt Eden gardens belonging to an artistic family, one of these the garden belonging to Ben Hanly and partner Suzanne Johnson. The couple are first and foremost stained-glass artists. A tall A-frame studio in their garden was custom-built to house Holy Trinity Cathedral's stained-glass windows, which they created. The cathedral's Great Window, designed by artist Nigel Brown, is said to be the largest expanse of stained-glass in the Southern Hemisphere.

TBC Old Boy Kane Williamson

Published by the NZ Herald, 8th Feb 2015

Batsmen often talk about cricket being a game in which failure is more common than success. When it comes to Kane Williamson, the opposite is becoming true.

Since the start of last year, Williamson has reached 50 in 12 of his 18 one-day international innings.

In his 60 ODI innings, he has passed 50 on 21 occasions - meaning he scores at least a half-century every 2.86 innings.

It's superior to other top New Zealand ODI batsmen - Glenn Turner's ratio is 3.33, Ross Taylor is 3.37 and Martin Crowe is 3.68 - and is another reason why Williamson is being talked about as such a talent.

His numbers look more extraordinary when compared with the top three international ODI run-scorers. Sachin Tendulkar's ratio is 3.11, Ricky Ponting's 3.26 and Kumar Sangakkara's 3.27.

Events

Your Association Committee is yet to meet this year but will shortly do so and develop a range of events following a similar pattern to recent years.  I hope that with early notice we will see increasing numbers supporting the Association by getting along to our various functions.
Our Annual  Dinner and Sports Day has been increasingly popular and so at the end of last year I looked to organize a cricket match for Old Boys with Rugby, Football, Basketball, Volleyball & Hockey using all the facilities in September a match then had not been possible.
On Sunday January 19th  more than 40 ex-1st XI players assembled at Ian Craig’s private ground at Matapihi for 2 T20 matches  and  a BBQ lunch cooked by Max Heimann.  Some of the cricket was impressive with those present including  first TBC captain Mike Sandlant and more recent skippers Eddie Hudson, Andrew Burn & Shane Cunliffe. Coaches of the teams there included Ian Campbell, Brent Elton, Max and yours truly. The day was an outstanding success and it looks like this will become an annual fixture. Check out the www.tbcobaorg.nz website for photos of the event.

Remembered Fondly

TBC Old Boys' Update #1 2013

A Happy New Year to You all. The 2013 school year is now well under way and there is plenty to report on. At the end of last year there was less movement of staff than I have known for a number of years however during the holidays Hamish Forbes left for his old school Palmerston North BHS while Steve Graham (Old Boy from the 1960's) left to teach in Rarotonga. Old Boy Steven Kelly (1993-97) has returned from Thailand to join the PE Department again.

Exam results have just all come out with our NCEA results being the best ever. Our Scholarship results were again much better than all of the other BOP schools with 37, 4 of which were Outstanding. In total 24 students gained Scholarships across 12 different subject areas. Year 12 student Todd Harris got 3 Scholarships while 2 others at that level got 2 each.

Last years Head Prefect Hautapu Baker was awarded a $5000 Westpac Scholarship for study at Auckland University.
